Mel Elfin, Who Built Up 'U.S. News' Rankings,' Dies

Mel Elfin, a Washington journalist who built up the U.S. News & World Report college rankings, died Saturday at the age of 89, The New York Times reported. Many college leaders -- as he built up the rankings in the 1980s -- criticized the project. While he made some changes, he did not waver in his push for the rankings.
