The Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has revamped its database of college athletics finances and found that the Football Bowl Subdivision, the most competitive of Division I institutions, took in more than $8.3 billion in revenue in 2017.
FBS colleges and universities spent a little more than $8 billion in 2017, the database from the commission, which lobbies for change in college athletics, shows.
About 22 percent of those expenditures ($1.8 billion) went toward facilities and equipment. Another 18 percent ($1.4 billion) was for coaches’ compensation.
Roughly $1.1 billion was dedicated to financial aid for athletes.
