A rheumatology professor and researcher who worked at Ohio State and Pennsylvania State Universities was sentenced to 37 months in prison for making false statements on National Institutes of Health grant applications, the Department of Justice announced Friday. Song Guo Zheng was also ordered to pay more than $3.4 million in restitution to the NIH and approximately $413,000 to Ohio State University. Zheng, who pleaded guilty last November, was accused of seeking to conceal his participation in a Chinese government-sponsored talent recruitment plan and his affiliation with a Chinese university.

Zheng is one of more than a dozen university-based researchers who have been criminally charged with lying to the federal government about their connections with China.
