Dixie State University's board voted to change the name of the institution to Utah Tech University, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Earlier, the board appeared to like the name Utah Polytechnic State University, but trustees admitted that name didn't work, in part because many people didn't know what "polytechnic" meant.

The move away from the Dixie State name came from a desire to end the association with the South and its history of racism. But many people in the local southern Utah community support the name. They wore red "Keep Dixie" T-shirts to the meeting at which the board voted.
