Amid enrollment challenges, the Universities of Wisconsin has closed campuses and cut employees as it seeks to fix financial challenges, with six of 13 institutions projecting budget deficits for next year. But now, individual campus chancellors could be in for big raises.

Chancellors across the UW system could each receive an annual raise of up to 15 percent—if they hit the retention targets for first-year undergraduate students in fiscal year 2025. The proposal was approved by the UW Board of Regents earlier this month, Wisconsin Public Radio reported

Individual performance targets will be specified after fall 2024 enrollment numbers are in.

UW-Madison is not included, given its already strong student retention rates. However, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin will receive tiered bonuses if she stays at the flagship. WPR reported that she will receive $150,000 if she stays on the job through 2025; $200,000 if she remains in her post through June 2026; and an extra $50,000 for each year she stays past that mark.
