Education Department Hires First Chief Economist

In a statement from James Kvaal, under secretary of the department, he stated that the Chief Economist position will be built out of the Office of the Under Secretary, but in the future the scope of the position could expand and may become permanent. “Secretary Cardona and I believe that our country needs a more inclusive system that helps many more students graduate and reach their goals. Leading colleges and universities are already finding proven solutions and using data to identify areas in need of improvement and evidence-based strategies to address them, evaluate the success of their efforts, and measure their progress,” said Kvaal in a blog post released Wednesday. “As Chief Economist, Jordan will help the Department of Education lead by example, and I hope the broader research community will find him a helpful ally in helping the Department and the field to better integrate cutting-edge research and evidence into practice and policy.”
