Ohio State University is hiring the head of the University of Nebraska system as its next president.

Walter (Ted) Carter Jr. was superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy for five years before becoming president of the Nebraska system in 2020. While at Nebraska, he started a promise program for low- and middle-income students and froze tuition twice.

“President Carter brings an unparalleled combination of strategic leadership and true service, and we could not be more thrilled to welcome him and his family to Ohio State,” Hiroyuki Fujita, the chair of Ohio State’s board, said in a news release.

At Ohio State, Carter succeeds Kristina Johnson, whose presidency ended mysteriously after less than three years. Like Carter, she too was a system head, having led the State University of New York system.
