Saying he is on a quest for trust and justice, Cornel West is seeking the presidency as a third-party candidate.

West, a philosopher, author and progressive activist who is the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City, said in the video announcement that he wants to empower those who have been pushed to the margins.

“Neither political party wants to tell the truth about Wall Street, about Ukraine, about the Pentagon, about Big Tech,” he said.

West previously taught at Harvard University and Princeton University. He left Harvard in 2021 for the seminary in part because of a tenure dispute.

He’s running for president with the People’s Party, a new populist party started by a former staffer from Vermont senator Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign.

On whether his campaign has what it takes to win, “we shall see,” West said.

“But some of us are going to go down fighting, go down swinging with style and a smile,” he added.
