  • Nearly two-thirds of full-time M.B.A. programs are reporting that they received more applications this year than last, according to a survey from the Graduate Management Admissions Council. Applications were reported up at 69 percent of part-time programs. The survey also found that 57 percent of programs -- full- and part-time -- reported that they received more applications from women this year than last year.
  • Last month, Antioch University announced that it would reach out to alumni furious over plans to suspend operations of Antioch College by having a series of meetings (Webcast for alumni nationwide) to explain its financial situation. But Thursday night, when the first such meeting was to have taken place, alumni heard only a brief announcement that Antioch would not release information after all, because of a lawsuit filed by faculty members against the university. The Dayton Daily News reported that one alumni group "sat dumbstruck" as the announcement was made, and that alumni criticized the university for not providing information despite the suit.
  • Mark Emmert, president of the University of Washington, on Thursday issued a letter defending research and a press release about that research that offended the Disney Corporation. The research questioned the education value of baby videos and Disney officials complained that the release about the research overstated its findings. Emmert wrote that the researchers involved thought the release was a fair summary of their findings, although no substitute for reading the entire article, which appeared in The Journal of Pediatrics.
