Rep. John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, on Sunday announced that he is running for House Majority Leader. Boehner, chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, plays a key role in legislation affecting colleges. He has criticized colleges for not being accountable enough for their costs or for difficulty that students from nationally accredited institutions have in transferring their credits to regionally accredited ones. He has also been seen as strongly supportive of banking interests in debates over student loan policy.
"Truthiness" was declared the 2005 word of the year on Friday by the American Dialect Society, a group of linguists. The word, invented on the Colbert Report, refers to stating concepts one wishes to be true. The linguists also announced their selections in other language categories, such as most useful word or phrase (podcast), most euphemistic (internal nutrition), and best Tom Cruise-related word or phrase (jump the couch).
The College for Creative Studies on Sunday announced a $50 million bequest from Josephine Ford, who died last June. The Detroit college offers four-year degrees in art and design, with an emphasis on preparing students for careers using their skills in the auto industry. The funds from Ford -- the granddaughter of Henry Ford -- will be used to increase financial aid, to hire new faculty members, and to improve programs.
