Athabasca University, in Edmonton, Alberta, said Monday that it had become the first Canadian university to become accredited by a regional agency in the United States. The distance education institution, which bills itself as "Canada's Open University," said it had been granted accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
A trustee and other supporters of Florida State University made comments last week that angered leaders of the Seminole Nation and may have undermined the university's campaign to defend its continued use of the tribe's name for its sports teams, according to The Miami Herald (free registration required). The trustee, Richard McFarlain, apologized for saying that the Seminoles who lived in Oklahoma were not "real Seminoles" because they had left Florida in the 1830s.
A county judge in Illinois on Monday approved a $16 million settlement between Northwestern University and the family of a former football player who died on the practice field in 2001, The Chicago Tribune reported.
