A Senate appropriations subcommittee drafted a spending bill Tuesday that would provide $5.5 billion in funds for the National Science Foundation in the 2006 fiscal year, an increase of just $58.1 million, or barely, 1 percent, over what the agency is currentlyreceiving . The House of Representatives approved a competing measure this month that would boost the agency's budget to $5.64 billion, an increase of $171 million over this year's figure.
A former associate dean at the University of Florida pleaded guilty Friday to defrauding the institution of about $120,000, the Gainesville Sun reported. Timothy Van Susteren acknowledged that he had personally deposited payments that companies had made to the university to sponsor continuing education programs for physicians.
The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor has renewed its licensing agreements with the Coca-Cola Company, but has done so contingent on the company's agreeing to undertake an independent audit of its business practices in India and Colombia, according to The Detroit News. The newspaper reported that Coke officials have agreed to the university's demands, which are similar to those made by students at many campuses across the United States and in Europe.
