  • Students who enroll i n college immediately after high school are more likely to earn degrees than are those students who delay starting college, according to a new study by the National Center for Education Statistics.
  • The University of Missouri at Kansas City has placed on administrative leave a dean who admitted plagiarizing portions of a commencement speech, reported the Associated Press.
  • Paul Zingg, the president of California State University at Chico, announced last week that he had accepted the recommendations of a committee to reform Greek life on the campus. Among the recommendations: banning all alcohol and illegal drugs from fraternity and sorority houses and postponing rush in the fall so chapters can spend time thinking about their values and goals. Chico State has had several tragedies involving its Greek system, including the death in February of a fraternity pledge who had been drinking massive quantities of water in an apparent hazing incident.
  • When the University of Kansas sent an e-mail message recently to the 119 students who had failed all of their courses last semester, it accidentally included the e-mail addresses of all of the recipients in a way that identified them to all recipients, according to the Associated Press. The university is apologizing for the violation of student privacy, the AP said.
  • Scientists in California and Switzerland have retracted a 1997 article in Science, citing reports that a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faked some of the data in the study, according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle. The 1997 study examined problems in DNA of babies born with Cockayne syndrome, a rare childhood illness.
