  • The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to amend the Patriot Act to limit the right of federal law enforcement officials to obtain library records showing what individuals are reading. Library groups have been pushing for such a limit, saying that the original Patriot Act provisions infringe on readers' privacy.
  • A graduate student in chemistry at San Diego State University was arrested Wednesday on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and other illicit drugs in a campus lab. The arrest followed an eight-month investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the university.
  • An analysis by The Wall Street Journal found that some elite colleges aren't admitting anyone off of their waiting lists this year, and that many other elite colleges are admitting fewer students from the waiting list this year than they did last year.
