  • Three students at Minnesota State University at Mankato were killed Tuesday, and five other people were injured, when their van was in an accident while en route to Detroit, reported the Associated Press. The students were en route to a student competition of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
  • Voters in Pinal County on Tuesday rejected a plan to issue bonds for construction at Central Arizona College. Officials at the two-year institution told The Arizona Republic that the bond fund -- slated for $435 million -- was needed because of projections that enrollment will more than triple in the next 20 years.
  • More than one-third of the faculty members at Calvin College have signed an open letter protesting the policies of President Bush, who will give the graduation speech at the college on Saturday, according to local reports. The professors object to Bush's policies on Iraq, the economy and the environment. Some students are planning to wear buttons or armbands to protest the president.
  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has issued final regulations clarifying the rules for how colleges should handle allegations of research misconduct. The regulations are largely similar to a draft issued last April.
  • Ohio State University said on Tuesday that the National Collegiate Athletic Association had formally accused the Buckeye sports program of major violations in its football and men's and women's basketball programs. The violations included improper payments to athletes by boosters and former coaches, including Jim O'Brien, who the university fired as its head men's basketball coach last year.
