Johnnetta Cole announced that she would resign as president of Bennett College, then said she would reconsider after students, professors and trustees urged her to stay, The Greensboro News-Record reported. Cole, formerly president of Spelman College, became president of Bennett in 2002 and helped the financially struggling historically black institution regain some stability -- although she has also had to push new budget cuts there this year. The Greensboro newspaper said that, in explaining her initial reason for leaving, she cited a "splinter group," which she said had existed before her arrival on campus, that was holding back her work.
Peru State College students held a sit-in to protest the Nebraska institution's decision not to renew the contract of the adviser to the student newspaper, the Associated Press reported. The students say the move is retaliation for an article in the paper about the departure of two coaches from the university. A Peru State spokesman told the AP that the article was unrelated to the decision not to renew the contract.
