Undergraduates are politically engaged, but don't fit neatly into party or ideological categories, according to a new national poll from Harvard University's Institute of Politics. The poll found that student opposition to the U.S. war in Iraq is growing -- as is general opposition to U.S. foreign policy.
The University of California system offered more students from every major racial and ethnic group admission this year, officials announced Tuesday. Offers were down in 2004 due to budget cuts, but rebounded this year. While offers to minority applicants were up, the university saw a slight decrease in the percentage of admitted applicants who are the first in their families to attend college, come from families with income below $30,000 a year, or who attend poorly performing high schools.
The American Association for Higher Education, which announced last month that it is about to shut down, has found a new home for its BEAMS Program, which stands for Building Engagement and Attainment of Minority Students. The program will be run by the Alliance for Equity in Higher Education. BEAMS assists more than 100 colleges with programs to help minority students.
