Columbia University on Monday announced new grievance procedures for students who feel that they have been unfairly treated in their courses. The new procedures follow an investigation into allegations that Middle Eastern studies professors intimidated students who were pro-Israel. A faculty committee rejected most of those charges, but said that inadequate grievance procedures created distrust between students and professors.
The University of Maine at Orono acted in a "fundamentally fair" way when it suspended two former football players after concluding that they had sexually assaulted a female student, a federal judge ruled last week. Judge John A. Woodcock Jr.'s opinion closely and carefully analyzes the university's disciplinary procedures and concludes that, while they were "not deal and could have been better, they offered the students "the essential elements of due process."
An 11th-year senior at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater has become a media celebrity (well, for a few days) after he was profiled in the Wisconsin State Journal. The student, Johnny Lechner, says he needs one more year, but will then graduate.
