Boston University and edX will launch the MOOC platform's first master's in business administration degree in fall 2020 -- and it will be priced at less than half of what the private nonprofit university charges for its normal M.B.A., BU announced Tuesday.

The Questrom School of Business plans to offer the brand-new, part-time, fully online M.B.A. on the edX platform, which has 21 million learners, most of whom take free courses. EdX rolled out its first full master's degrees last fall; Boston University is the first nonpublic university to launch a lower-priced MOOC-based degree through the platform.

“I think this is a critical capability for us to develop, going into a time when the higher education landscape is disrupted by increasing opportunities for students to get certificates and degrees online,” Jean Morrison, the university's provost, said in a news release.
