A survey of more than 1,000 nontraditional students by Anthology found that 44 percent were attending a college closer to home than would have been the case before the pandemic.

Other findings:

  • Thirty-seven percent said their choice was based on the need to lower the cost of their education.
  • Twenty-nine percent said they looked more at online programs.
  • Twenty-eight percent said they took different courses than they would have previously.
  • Twenty-six percent said that they wanted to get a different job after graduating that is more secure/safe.

The survey looked at students who were older than 22. Only 54 percent of those surveyed were white. Most of the students transferred to the institution they were attending.
