Hundreds of students at the University of Washington walked out of classes Thursday to protest what they call racism and racist policies at the institution, The Seattle Times reported. Students demanded that the university sell holdings in any hedge funds that invest in private prisons. A university spokesman said the university has no direct investments in such prisons, and that only a relatively small share of the endowment is invested in hedge funds. Students are also demanding an increase in the number of black faculty members and an end to asking applicants about their criminal history. A university official noted that Washington's admissions question is more narrow than many others about criminal background, and asks only if someone has been convicted of a violent felony.
