  • Authorities have arrested a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California at San Francisco and charged him with poisoning a female colleague's drink, the Associated Press reported. No motive has been identified.
  • Ashland University, in Ohio, announced Tuesday that it was eliminating 48 non-faculty positions in response to a $3 million deficit, The Ashland Times-Gazette reported. Of the employees whose jobs are being eliminated, five are eligible for early retirement. Faculty contracts can't be adjusted mid-year, but the university said that 29 professors agreed to take cuts in pay.
  • Lehigh University is organizing meetings and other activities in the wake of reports of a series of racist comments made to black students in the wake of Barack Obama's election as president of the United States, The Morning Call reported. In one incident, leaflets reading "Your president is black. How does that make you feel?" were inserted without permission into copies of the student newspaper.
