The U.S. remains the world leader in funding of scientific research but risks losing that spot to international competitors, warns a report released Tuesday.
The report was produced by the Task Force on American Innovation, an alliance of research universities, scientific groups and private-sector entities. It finds that the U.S. share of research and development funding is declining and that China is on pace to surpass American expenditures. Meanwhile, countries like South Korea, Germany and the United Kingdom have established national strategies to build investments in research.
"Maintaining a global lead in science is critical to American national security and economic interests," said Tobin Smith, vice president for policy at the Association of American Universities and co-chair of the report. "But this report clearly documents that the rest of the world is catching up very quickly."
