Professor Hong Yang proposes a course on environmental studies in China, including an optional three-week summer travel component.
Yang leads 13 students to Beijing, Tianjing, Shandong, Nanjing, Wuxi and Guilin. Qu Geping, the first director of China’s national environmental protection unit, visits Bryant’s campus in Rhode Island.
Yang leads another 11 students to China as part of environmental studies in China course; he also organizes two professional development trips to China for faculty, involving six other Bryant professors.
Bryant jointly organizes a symposium on the metasequoia tree (Yang’s research specialty) with and at the China University of Geosciences, in Wuhan.
Yang travels with Bryant President Ronald K. Machtley and Net Grace, a Bryant trustee, to China.
Bryant establishes the U.S.-China Institute; Yang is named founding director. Yang and Machtley lead group of eight trustees to China.
Bryant hosts the second international conference on the metasequoia tree. Bryant signs an agreement with Hanban, an agency of the Chinese Ministry of Education, to host a Confucius Institute.
Thirty Bryant students and four professors travel to China in first year of Sophomore International Experience Program. U.S.-China Institute hosts 50 high school students for first STARTALK Program (a critical languages initiative funded by the U.S. government). Confucius Institute Program Coordinator Kun Xie and Jon Lu, a Chinese language instructor, lead 35 high school students and teachers on a STARTALK trip to China. A China University of Geosciences delegation attends opening ceremony for Bryant’s Confucius Institute. Bryant’s Department of Modern Languages is created with Chinese professor as chair.
Model for replica of Shu Fang Zhai unveiled in ceremony involving Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. Twelve Bryant students travel to China for summer internships through a joint project with the China University of Geosciences. Confucius Institute organizes trip to China for Rhode Island school superintendents and principals.
Bryant hosts 21st North American Conference on Chinese Linguistics. Bryant’s Confucius Institute opens first three “Confucius Classrooms” in cooperation with local K-12 schools.
Machtley and Yang travel to China to sign agreement with the Palace Museum on the Shu Fang Zhai project and open a joint environmental institute at China University of Geosciences.
Bryant signs agreement with the Beijing Institute of Technology’s Zhuhai campus to establish Bryant University Zhuhai as a joint venture.
Ping Hao, China’s vice minister of education, leads a delegation to Bryant’s campus including representatives from Bryant’s partner universities, China University of Geosciences and Beijing Institute of Technology Zhuhai.
