University of San Francisco president Paul Fitzgerald resigned abruptly on Monday after 10 years in the job, according to a letter from the Board of Trustees.
The letter gave no reason for his departure from the private Jesuit institution, noting only, “Fr. Fitzgerald has now decided that the time is right for him to discern his next professional opportunities.”
The trustees credited Fitzgerald with raising more than $300 million, expanding the campus footprint and developing a new strategic plan.
In a statement, Fitzgerald called it “an honor and privilege to serve as USF’s 28th president” and vowed to “ensure a seamless transition” to the new leadership.
Faculty were caught off guard by his decision to step down, according to KQED.
The search for a new president will begin immediately.
