Oak Point University in Illinois announced last week that it is unexpectedly closing at the end of the spring semester, shuttering its two campuses, local news station WGN9 reported.
The closure reportedly caught both students and employees by surprise.
“It comes in response to a series of factors that have affected our University. Despite the tireless efforts of our faculty, staff, and the unwavering support of our alumni and friends, the challenges we face are beyond what we can surmount in our current form,” Oak Point University President Therese Scanlan wrote to the campus community in an email, which was obtained by WGN9.
Publicly available financial documents show that Oak Point, formerly known as Resurrection University, saw a roughly $2.4 million operating loss in fiscal year 2022. The private, health-services–oriented university has also struggled in recent years with enrollment, which fell from 860 students in fall 2019 to 429 in fall 2022, according to the Education Department’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System
Oak Point has established a teach-out program with nearby Lewis University.
