Canada will sharply reduce the number of international student visas it issues for the next two years, the CBC reported.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Monday that the government will approve about 360,000 undergraduate permits for 2024—a 35 percent decline from 2023.
The move is intended both to limit the role of “bad actors” who abuse the system and to help ease Canada’s housing crisis.
The permits will be divided among the country’s territories and provinces, which will each then decide how to allot them among the institutions in their jurisdiction. That will result in an uneven distribution, with some provinces seeing as much as a 50 percent decrease in visas.
The number of international students receiving a postsecondary education in Canada has skyrocketed over the past decade, from about 300,000 in 2013 to over a million at the end of last year, Bloomberg reported.
