The University of California, Davis, cut short its commencement Friday due to a heat wave that hospitalized seven people who were attending, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The commencement started at 8 a.m. to take advantage of cooler air, but by 8 a.m. it was already 80 degrees, and the heat was rising.

The university sent a message to graduates and their families before commencement started: “To grads/families on the field RIGHT NOW—it is extremely hot. If you have crossed the stage, you DO NOT need to stay to the end. Feel free to leave and head to Hutchison Field where there is COLD water and air conditioning at the U Center. We’re working on a stadium announcement.”
