Students gather to protest at Appalachian State.Students at Appalachian State University marched through Boone, N.C., sometimes blocking traffic, and then entered the administration building on campus Thursday, vowing to stay there until Chancellor Sheri N. Everts condemns a new North Carolina law that bars localities from passing laws against bias based on sexual orientation and bars public colleges and universities from allowing transgender people to use the bathrooms or locker rooms that correspond with their gender identities. Everts on Wednesday issued a statement pledging to continue to support diversity and inclusiveness on campus in the wake of the new North Carolina law, but she did not condemn the law. Appalachian State officials did not respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
