No Hate Crimes Found in San Jose State Bullying Case

A California jury found three white men -- all former students at San Jose State University -- guilty of misdemeanor battery against a black suite mate in 2013, but did not reach any hate crime verdicts in the case, The San Jose Mercury News reported. The actions of the then students against a new black student stunned the campus and horrified many nationwide. The students were found by campus investigators to have taunted the black freshman, to have called him "three-fifths" and to have placed a bike lock around his neck. The "three-fifths" name was a reference to the original provisions in the U.S. Constitution counting black people as less than full citizens.
