What happens to distinguished academic leaders when they become head of the NCAA? For Myles Brand to say that he is “surprised” at the number of special athletic admits to these football machines is a sad commentary and tells us that the only genuine oversight of these professional college programs should start with the abolition of the NCAA. I do believe that the university presidents have that authority. Whether they have the courage to band together, return their institutions to their academic mission, and in doing so probably lose their jobs is another story...

Let it be known that William and Mary trustees have chosen to install “President Not-Gene-Nichol” over anyone of another name. Such rearview navigation suggests that “stability” is of greater concern than excellence, as if a rigorous search risked upsetting the relative calm over which Mr. Reveley has presided for the past several months. That the man has done nothing so controversial as Mr. Nichol in that time does not suggest anything about what he has done or can do. After all, the fact that something in his behavior during that particular period has augmented his resume in such a way as to persuade the board to drop “Interim” from his title only begs the question of whether his actions were grand or his inactions.
The trustees now run a much more substantial risk—subverting the power of their executive. What is truly wanted is a president as strong in his own right as Mr. Nichol, but distinct. What is not needed is an act of politics in place of prudence. As an outsider, I submit that the board’s decision may be out of step with the mission of one of our oldest American institutions. Reveley may be right for the job. The least they could have done was feign a search.

A STORM of Criticism is Warranted
No Mr. LaDuca. You’re a race baiter and a racist for writing this stuff. But then I saw your organization affiliation, and with only 2% of your convention attended by people of color (down from a still disheartening 6% in 2004), I am not surprised. At least when your flying monkeys post that Mr. Obama is a Muslim, you’re only lying and not being racist. So is that what “STORM” is? A STORM of white sheets and burning crosses? “Twitter” this. Argus gets poked again! We too collect data.
