If you listened carefully to Senator Obama on affirmative action last night, you would have heard him note that affirmative action is about the “whole person", not just race. He is no more in need of affirmative action protections than is John McCain.

PS, I agree with the sentiment of your statement, but the reality is that even Senator Obama needs affirmative action if he is to win this election. The affirmative action he needs is for the American people to move beyond the issue of race.

Perhaps not all owners of career schools are in a position to do so, but I would like to see a committment from the owners of private, for profit schools to fund from their own resources for those poor students who have maxed out their federal loan for the year and who are turned down for private loans due to credit. When the stock market is down money managers often eat their fees after all.
It is not quite the equivalent of a Harvard or Yale, but it would be a start. If the owners say that they cannot, perhaps the congressional committee which is investigating endowments should include a look into how much profit from these schools are reinvested into their mission.
If they profit in good times, and they do, they should reinvest in bad times. The taxpayers should not be expected to protect private profits.

Alas, Texas Tech is in serous trouble. The Chancellor is micromanaging and sticking his nose where it has absolutely no business being. What the article does not state is that Mr. Hance (no, he does not have a Ph.D.), has been causing problems from the beginning. He has made comments that have been beyond politically incorrect and have clearly shown how ignorant he is of life in the academy. Until he is gone, TTU is going to continue to have very serious problems. It’s a shame — the university has potential — if only it had quality leadership.

C.J. Just a point of clarification. By “move beyond the issue of race,” do you mean simply ignore it or move beyond by confronting and courageously moving through the issue of race?

If Senator Clinton supports affirmative action she should immediately concede the nomination to her equally-qualified black opponent. Or does she feel that kind of thing is for the hoi polloi, not her?
