New Programs: Motorsports Management, Bioinformatics, Technology and Society, Law and Economics, Accelerated MBA

  • Belmont Abbey College, in North Carolina, has started a concentration in motor sports management as part of its undergraduate degree in business.
  • Johns Hopkins University has started a master’s degree in bioinformatics, which combines computer science and molecular biology. The program is offered online and is designed for working professionals who already have degrees in the biological sciences or engineering.
  • The University of California at Santa Barbara is creating a “Ph.D. emphasis” in technology and society. The emphasis, roughly equivalent to an undergraduate minor, could be part of numerous doctoral programs.
  • Vanderbilt University is creating a Ph.D. program in law and economics. As part of the effort, the university recently announced that it had recruited W. Kip Viscusi and Joni Hersch from their faculty positions at Harvard Law School.
  • Walsh College and Macomb Community College, both in Michigan, have announced an accelerated M.B.A. program in which students will start at Macomb and earn an associate degree there, and then move to Walsh to finish a bachelor’s degree and an M.B.A. Students could earn all three degrees in five years instead of the typical six.
