  • Republican leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives Education and the Workforce Committee said Monday that they would propose legislation Wednesday that would prohibit the U.S. Education Department from creating a new "unit record" database because it would use "private, personally identifiable information" to track students' academic progress. The panel's leaders said the measure would be considered as an amendment to legislation to renew the Higher Education Act, which the Subcommitteeon 21st Century Competitiveness is due to take up Wednesday.
  • A local newspaper in Chico, Calif., pulled a critical article about the California State University campus from some copies of its "Goin' Chico" city guide after university officials threatened not to distribute the guidein its orientation packets for students, the Associated PressWednesday reports. The Chico News & Review said it had promised advertisers that the guide would be distributed to students, and so in the edition of the guide to be distributed to students, it replaced an article about Cal State Chico's reputation as a party school with a welcome address from the university's president, the AP said.
  • Corinthian Colleges, Inc. announced that an arbitrator had ruled in its favor in a class action brought by a group of current and former students at one of its Florida Metropolitan College campuses. According to Corinthian, the student had accused the institution of concealing that it was not regionally accredited and that its credits cannot always be transferred, charges that the arbitrator rejected.
