A coalition of colleges and companies that monitors the working conditions at manufacturers of collegiate apparel announced Thursday that it had accredited the compliance programs of six of its member companies. The Fair Labor Association said that adidas-Salomon, Eddie Bauer, Liz Claiborne, Nike, Phillips-Van Heusen and Reebok had met its requirements for implementing a "rigorous" code of conduct in its factories.
The chairman of the Board of Governors at the University of Western Ontario has blasted a university panel, headed by President Paul Davenport, for awarding an honorary degree to a staunch advocate for a woman's right to choose an abortion. Don McDougall said the awarding of the degree to Henry Morgenthaler would inflict a "permanent scar" on the institution; a faculty leader called the board chairman's interference "utterly wrong and a dreadful misuse of that position."
A week after ceremoniously unveiling a new sports nickname, 'Gold,' Marquette University's Board of Trustees abandoned it Wednesday, citing alumni and student dissatisfaction with the choice. The trustees reiterated their refusal to reinstate the "Warriors" nickname and mascot that several donors and alumni had been pushing for, and said they would begin a new process involving online voting.
