Thousands of teaching assistants were planning to strike today at the 23 campuses of the California State University System. But with the strike looming and final exams starting, the university and the union reached a tentative settlement, and the TA union called off the strike.
Details on the settlement are not yet available. But a statement posted on the Web site of the California Alliance of Academic Student Employees called the agreement "historic" and said that it would be submitted to members for formal approval. The contract would be the first one between the university and the union, which is affiliated with the United Auto Workers.
The university and the union have been split on a range of issues, including pay, benefits, and working conditions. In recent weeks, union officials have also questioned whether the university was negotiating in good faith, although university officials have said that they were working hard to conclude a contract.
Both the union and the university have statements posted on their Web sites outlining their goals for a contract.
