  • The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has urged the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I Board of Directors to reject a proposal to let football teams play a 12th regular season game. In a letter to the presidents on the board and to Myles Brand, the NCAA's president, the Knight panel said that the arguments for adding the extra game are primarily "to relieve the financial pressures stemming from escalating costs," and that such a move should be rejected until it becomes clear whether the NCAA's new academic reforms have the intended effect of improving graduation rates.
  • Southern Connecticut State University barred a student from a poetry class after a professor complained that the student's poem contained a threat to assault her, the Associated Press reported. The student began a campus protest Monday, and was informed that he could return to class -- shortly after the AP asked questions about the suspension.
