The 500,000+ readers* of Inside Higher Ed aren’t people who spend time hunting through job boards. They’re the forward-looking educators who read our news every weekday, to stay on top of the trends and issues affecting higher education. IHE’s readership covers the full spectrum in academe**:

  • 40% of our readers are academics — that’s everyone from grad students to department chairs.
  • 30% of our readers hold administrative titles in admissions, development, student services, business affairs, financial aid, and other areas
  • 20% of our readers are at the executive level (deans, VPs, presidents and other senior officers).
  • The remaining 10% of the readership comprises parents, politicos, reporters, and others with an interest in higher education, but no affiliation with a specific institution
  • 15% of our readers work at community colleges.
  • We have readers in all 50 states and about 10% of our readers are international

On Inside Higher Ed, your postings don’t just reside in our career section. They’re displayed to our full readership, linked to every editorial article and opinion piece.

Diversity

We estimate that 20% of our readers are members of underrepresented minorities:

  • ~10% are African American
  • ~5% are Asian
  • ~3.5% are Hispanic
  • ~1.5% are Native American/Hawaiian/Alaskan
  • ~45%/55% men and women.

Our understanding of the demographics of our audience comes from our e-mail subscriber survey and the information users provide when they create a profile for our credentials bank.

The best candidate pool

The readers of Inside Higher Ed are the mobile, dynamic higher education professionals you want to hire — in fact, 46% have been in their current jobs for three years or less.

About 10% of our readers say they’re on the job hunt, but 33% of them say they do take a look at the jobs when they’re on the site to keep an eye on what’s happening in their field. And ALL Inside Higher Ed readers are seeing your open jobs as they read the articles and comment on the topics discussed on the site.

When they are in the market for new jobs, 92% say that they look at jobs online vs. only 36% who do so in print.

And among our readers, Inside Higher Ed is their top choice for searching for jobs. Only 37% use HEJ.com and not even half use The Chronicle of Higher Education.

What are you doing to ensure a diverse audience?

First, we’re making our content free to readers and job seekers. Higher education is most diverse among younger academics (who can’t afford high prices for information) and institutions such as community colleges that don’t have large budgets for subscriptions. We reach all of these people.

Second, we’re covering issues that matter to everyone in higher education. We pay attention to women’s issues, to historically black colleges, to community colleges — when diverse readers, and people at diverse institutions come to our site, they find themselves and their institutions and issues covered.

Finally, we’re actively seeking marketing opportunities that reach diverse constituencies. From advertising venues to mailing lists to professional conferences, we’ll pay special attention to spending our marketing dollars where they’ll bring us to the attention of diverse audiences.

What kinds of openings are right for Inside Higher Ed?

Inside Higher Ed accepts postings from all accredited institutions of post-secondary education, as well as legitimate employers outside higher education. The site is specifically for professional positions — faculty (both full time and adjunct) and administrative jobs. While we won’t necessarily reject clerical, support or other staff level jobs, the focus of the site is on professional jobs.

Who should post their open jobs with us?

A central tenet of the Inside Higher Ed mission is inclusiveness. We believe that ALL institutions of postsecondary education — public and private, two-year and four-year, nonprofit and proprietary, large and small — are part of our constituency. In addition, any organization that hopes to hire highly educated, highly qualified employees would benefit from including Inside Higher Ed in its recruiting strategy.

Are there postings you won’t take?

We won’t accept postings from diploma mills, or any employer we consider inappropriate. We won’t post jobs that include requirements that violate federal anti-bias laws. Our Terms and Conditions make it clear that we have the right to reject any posting for any reason. An important note — there are institutions with legal rights to consider religion in their hiring practices. Inside Higher Ed happily accepts advertising from these institutions.
