The University of California, San Diego, has added a real-time course activity feed to its Open EdX platform, allowing for more rigorous data collection of student activity on the university's MOOC offerings.

The Open EdX Caliper feed bridges "incompatibilities between the data format and campus analytics applications" that previously prevented professors from drawing on student performance to guide course design, according to a press release. The tool, for example, will help instructors know how many students watch videos and how many times they take practice quizzes.

Code for the tool is available for free.
