The National Association for College Admission Counseling announced a new mission and vision at its annual meeting last week in Seattle.

The new mission is “Empowering college admission counseling professionals through education, advocacy and community.” That's shorter and more direct than the old mission: “NACAC defines professional standards and provides leadership, knowledge, advocacy, research and a forum for collaboration to support admission and counseling professionals.”

The new vision for the organization is “The transformative power of postsecondary education is accessible to all.” The old vision statement was “NACAC empowers admission and counseling professionals to champion the opportunity for all individuals to pursue higher education and aspire to lives of personal achievement and contribution to the public good.”

In a speech at the meeting, Angel B. Pérez, chief executive officer of NACAC, said it was significant that a form of the word “empowers” was in the new mission. “We are an association that supports the people who cultivate, nurture and shape the future of college admission,” he said. “We are a steadying force for professionals, a source of trusted resources and guiding ethical standards.”

He also noted the word “community,” saying, “Education is not a system; it is a large and diverse community. So is the profession of college admission counseling.”
