Drew University

The webpage for Fall Forward, the new enrollment campaign at Drew University, a private college in New Jersey, features a picture of the campus with the tagline, "It's not too late to start classes this semester."

Many for-profit universities and some community colleges have start times throughout the year, but relatively few private colleges do.

Drew is accepting students into a special program in which students will enroll part-time and complete three two-credit courses over the rest of the fall semester. Classes at the university started Aug. 30, but for the abbreviated semester, classes start Oct. 19. Those six credits will cost $4,550 in tuition (full-time tuition for a year is $41,820).

Frank Merckx, vice president of campus life and student affairs and dean of students, said he's not sure how many students will enroll. But he said, "We have had students and families reach out for opportunities and felt that creating this cohort, no matter the size, fit well for Drew, our mission and these students."

The students in the program aren't necessarily admitted to the university for good, he added. "Students who were admitted to Drew for the 2021-22 year and did not choose to come full-time but are interested in taking part in the Fall Forward program will not have to reapply to become full-time students in spring 2022," he said. "For those who have not already been admitted full-time to Drew for 2021-22, an additional application for full enrollment in spring 2022 may be required."

He said Drew was "very close to our target of new students" in the fall.
